Before and After . . . But Mostly Before. I Hope.

Have I ever mentioned what terrible builders Bee and I are?  I think Bee thinks he's good, and he's definitely better than I am, but . . . still . . .

Here's the beginning of the Chicken Taj Mahal.  It may not end up looking like much of a palace, but -- because of the amount of work we've put into it with very un-obvious results -- it feels like we're working on the Taj Mahal.

This picture was taken after I'd dug a trench all the way around the perimeter of the Taj Mahal's yard, piling all the dirt in the center, so that we could lay wire underground (to prevent animals digging into the yard).  THEN we decided we'd better just lay wire under the entire thing, not just a foot in, so we had to move all that dirt back out to the side.  BUT before that could be done, we had to move the bricks and rocks that made up the unused fire pit that sits a foot outside the coop.  By the time we'd done all that, we needed to take a break for a week.

The Taj hasn't progressed much since this picture was taken 8 days ago.  We've got the lowest level of chicken wire attached to the side, and we've put the floor into the coop, but that's about it.  Despite our best efforts, the wire slants from one side of the yard to the other, and one of the support posts is about 6 inches lower than all the others.

So we still have to build the coop (including nestboxes and a slanting roof), build a door so we can access the yard, and run chicken wire around the entire thing.  Oh, and Bee wants to make a domed chicken wire roof for the yard.

The funny thing is, when we were first dating and in The Honeymoon Stage of Home Improvement, we'd always congratulate ourselves on how well we worked as a team.  Then we entered the Old Married Couple Stage of Home Improvement, where we just bitched at each other and blamed all problems on our spouse.  Now, we seem to be in the Wise Married Couple Stage of Home Improvement, where we know which buttons not to push, which things not to say, and when it is smartest to just let the other partner do it their way.

So I think it would be best if I just let Bee dome the damn roof on his own.
