I Hope They Have Chocolate In Hell

(a pin given to Mr. C)
First, a moment of irony:

God bless America

But now, on to more damning topics.
Several years ago, I came across a card proclaiming "The Candy Cane Means Jesus!".  As I was raised Catholic, I was naturally intrigued how sugar has anything to do with the son of God.

The card went on to explain that the candy cane was created as a symbol of Jesus because:
  • the white stripes stood for his purity
  • the red stripes symbolized the blood he shed for our sins
  • and the shape, like a shepherd's staff, reminded us that shepherds were some of his first visitors AND stood as an allegory for how he 'led his flock' to salvation
I thought all this was kind of cute.  I figured it was bullcrap, of course, but -- still -- cute.  Further internet research (so it MUST be true) has shown that there is, indeed, no proof that the candy cane (which was originally just a white stick) was ever meant to symbolize Jesus.

But, still, I don't have a problem with the claim.  I think it's refreshing, in fact, that religion is trying to wrestle back some of the trappings of the season to remind us that Christmas was once a religious holiday, and not a commercial reason to buy crap.

My only problem, in fact, with "The Candy Cane Means Jesus!" is that it creates an opportunity for smartasses such as myself to corrupt the sentiment.  So, should you happen to be a fellow smartass, here is my Christmas gift to you:

The Candy Cane Means Jesus.

Jesus is jealous

Jesus is in love

Jesus is depressed

Jesus is breast cancer-aware

Jesus has gay pride

Jesus really is white
