1% Milk Bones

This ad came with the bundle of crap that is weekly thrown on our doorstep, despite the fact that we've repeatedly asked the newspaper company not to deliver the awesome 'your essential shopper!' bundle to us . . . particularly since we don't even get the regular paper.

I was filled with equal parts admiration and derision
when I saw this particular ad, though.  I'm all for 'tasty treats you can give more often', but I am a little offended by the wording just above the Milkbone box picture.  Can you see that?  Right there?  "Only 5 calories per treat."

Now even our dogs have to count calories?  Are we to be concerned, flipping through our Star magazines and US Weeklies, that Paris' and Lindsay's little yappers are more svelt than our own?  That their puppies can fit into couture brands of dog accoutrement, whilst our fat mutts must buy off the rack at Wal-Mart?

And so I ask you: what does this say about our society that we find it necessary to enforce our own image-conscious, size-obsessed, calorie-counting mindset on our pets?
